The politics on this aren't perfect - should have taken jabs at the system itself rather than a group. I wrote this while listening to Blur an awful lot and wanting to take a shot at offering something with the same acerbic texture as sort of an homage to the band.
And it was a joy to write and perform! Trying to play bass like Alex, guitar like Graham, and write like Damon was honestly a hell of a lot of fun for me. This track is also probably as close as I get to tilting my hand and showing the listener the sort of music I grew up with.
Graham in specific was a huge inspiration for me as a kid, though my past work wouldn't really show it. He's why I love Telecasters. Watching interviews on how he constructed guitar parts in the early days of Blur helped shape my own approach in creating the guitar tracks here.
lyrics
(ichi, ni, san, shi)
(Found a place)
It's no bigger than my car
(All this space)
I can almost fit a toaster in
(Work two jobs)
Hope I land a third!
(The American dream)
Oh, how sweet it is!
And I know, and I know
I'm gonna be one of them
Someday
Oh I know, oh I know
I'm gonna be like them
And I know, yes I know
I'm gonna be one of them
Someday
Oh I know, oh I know
Just watch me!
(I don't share)
I can't afford to anyway
(No healthcare)
Where will we find the money?
(Pull myself)
Up, up, up, by!
(My bootstraps)
I've got mine, now get yours!
And I know, and I know
I'm gonna be one of them
Someday
Oh I know, oh I know
I'm gonna be like them
And I know, yes I know
I'm gonna be one of them
Someday
Oh I know, oh I know
Just watch me!
And maybe Jeff Bezos
Will afford me
A taste around his heel
He'll indulge me
And when I'm one of them
Oh, embrace me
With their billion-dollar smiles
From up on high in our guillotines
And I know, and I know
I'm gonna be one of them
Someday
Oh I know, oh I know
I'm gonna be like them
And I know, yes I know
I'm gonna be one of them
Someday
Oh I know, oh I know
Just watch me!
the bass on this is perfect, my god. the heaviness and the grit is perfect, and the fact that ya hear that from beginning to end is FANTASTIC!! i especially love the inclusion of more high-pitched instrumentals like the pianos, namely. and when they leave, oh Goddddd does it get real hardcore. this really is ultra demonpowered supercharged hardcore, no joke. not only that, this album is Hellaaaa innovative with its composition. some seriously good sequences (esp w the chiptune) going on, love it Molly
